Have you ever heard of it? CED or Capacitance Electronic Disc. As the color TV market began to saturate, RCA began looking for a new way to maintain market dominance in consumer entertainment. Starting as a research project in the 60's at David Sarnoff Labs (RCA Labs) in Princeton, NJ, the CED system of video disc existed from 1981-1986 and while somewhat unique among technologies never materialized to the market king it was once hoped. Many factors were at play here and the shortcomings of the technology itself that are now so apparent likely played only a little part in the overall failure of CED. Corporate politics, lack of consistent management behind the project and multi year delays that resulted from this were the real killers. Why is this on my web site? Well, I have taken to collecting CEDs and am trying to collect 1 of every disc made. If you have a collection of these discs in your basement or attiac I might just be interested in them.
